I wrote an exact blog post like this three years ago when I thought I found my new job after ten years at WIS. Things didn’t exactly work out in early 2019 and I was back with my old friends at office 3609. Fast forward to this year and I think I made the right decision this time around.
I’ve spent most of my post academia life in retail, working in restaurants and traveling with my office doing inventory. Some of the various stores we counted were JCPenney, Kohls, Lowes, Joann Fabrics, and most recently we just got Target back. I’ve also counted plenty of dollar stores as well as small clothing stores in the mall.
For most of that time post academia, I was with WIS International. Recently I stepped down to take a job closer to home with Giant Eagle. Everyday is a learning experience and I’ve made it count every night there. Sometimes I felt the past knocking at my door reminding me of past failures but I’ve passed that valley for good now.
Working close to home has felt like a culture shock, but it’s a blessing. However, I find the enjoyment in reaching into the WIS archives and telling my new work family some of the “horror stories” of counting at some of our bigger events. I’ve started to forget what it was like to work on the road. Being close to home does that to you, and it feels so good. I’m glad I have some of my old work friends to keep in touch with though.
At 40, it’s obvious I have way more appreciation for Giant Eagle than I did Kings and Eat’n Park (I worked for Park Classic Diner). I’m also more aware of the opportunities that are knocking on the doorstep. I’m not that same person who longed for the “good old days” of college even just a few years back.
Everything happens for a reason, and in early 2019 it was the right time for me to return to WIS after a short stint with Giant Eagle. That set the stage for all the good things took place in 2019 and helped mold me into who I am today. I wouldn’t have started this blog and I wouldn’t have found myself.
In 2021, when the WIS-RGIS merger was going to be a reality, I knew change was coming. Initially, I gave it the benefit of the doubt. Eventually though, I knew I needed to make that change for me. The question of where I would go was answered a week before Thanksgiving, and it was right for me to take a chance on it.
In November 2021, it was the right time for me to leave WIS and give Giant Eagle a chance. My work family was pulling for me to succeed and left the door open just in case I wanted to return. I’ve seen myself improve over time and feel as if I made the right decision.
I’ve been an avid listener of The Local 724 podcasts since late 2020 in an attempt to get to know my community better. 2020 was the year of supporting my local everything as small businesses were hit hard by the effects of the pandemic 😷. Jordan Hauser, the man behind the the podcasts, talks to local business owners and gets to know them better.
This most recent podcast was no different as Jordan and co-host Ryan Kelley had Alisha Edwards and Juliet Majestic in studio. The podcast has had Alisha on many times and she’s served as a cohost along with Sarah Petro/Just. On this week’s show, Jordan and Ryan got to know Juliet better, highlighting her art and how she’s become a fixture in the Greensburg community.
I met Juliet at the Trendy Bunny back in the Fall of 2020. I was in town for the Greensburg Night Market and I actually stopped in the shop that evening as they were open late on Thursdays. She has an amazing personality and while visiting Trendy one day, I gave her one of my Hallmark Countdown to Christmas books. She was overjoyed and started getting inspiration for the holidays.
I had her make a portrait of me and my now former coworkers from my work Christmas party back in 2019. I would have had her do the same for that picture of me, Sara and Rob from their wedding; or that one of us in front of the gazebo. Here’s the picture she drew and the girls really loved it.
I’ve been learning more about the Fine Arts for Littles classes Juliet is teaching by checking out the Instagram page. There’s some amazing work on there and this girl is really showcasing her talents. I think about all the work Angie Shaw/Wright has done to make Greensburg look beautiful and Juliet is on that level too. She studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design and worked at Anthropologie Home Outlet before coming to the Trendy Bunny Studio.
I haven’t visited Trendy since their first birthday event due to other events like my health scare in the Spring, as well as them being closed during the summer last year. I still keep up with them on Instagram and I am pleased to see the direction in which Alisha is taking Trendy. From children’s birthday parties to baby showers and other events, they seem to be doing a great business.
Tomorrow is Trendy’s second birthday. I wasn’t there for the grand opening but they had a full house that night from the pics I saw on Instagram. I was excited when I heard Wolf and Whisk and A Pretty Flower were going to be moving in. I’ve seen Kelsey at Night Markets and also at the Grand Opening for Masterspieces and her cookies are amazing. I also met Dani at one of the night markets and I know Sara would love to get some flowers from her. I’m looking forward to updates from Alisha on all things Trendy.
I’ll close off the blog with a shoutout to Lacey Douds. She’ll be busy this year with upcoming markets. She is the owner of The Golden Tee Co. and we met at Trendy in September of 2020 (she was one of the first people I met there).
She’ll be involved with the Greensburg Night Market and Ligonier Country Market this summer. Also, she will be doing Steeltown Market this April and the Mothers Marketplace this May, as well as the Neighborhood Flea on Mother’s Day and the I Made It Market this summer. The Mothers’ Marketplace is held at Bella Terra Vineyards in Hunker (near my old WIS office).
Lacey is going places and I wish her the best. I will be attending at least two or three of those markets this summer.
Two weeks ago, I had some Old Navy Super Cash I wanted to spend. I made some purchases in January but I knew I had more amazing fashionwear in mind. I wanted to continue to build on my successful gender nonconformity storyline of 2021 and not write it off as a phase.
I ordered my T-shirts and some cute summery outfits (OK they’re dresses 👗). Harry’s got some competition. With the Super Cash in addition to some great sales, I saved a lot of money. I haven’t tried on the dresses yet but plan to soon. Look out Harry Styles. The tops fit well and here are some pictures I took last night.
“I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. You are slaying it 🔥 🔥 🔥!!!”—Sara Newsom (my just as fashionable “sister”)
These tops are perfect for a Saturday trip to Phipps to see the new Spring flowers or a Sunday at Greendance or Bella Terra (Moms’ Marketplace is May 14 & 15). Strawberry 🍓 season is coming (cherry 🍒 season too). I’m thinking of all the great desserts that can be made with strawberries.
Pair these tops with jeans and some cute accessories as well as a pair of sandals (a pair of those slides from the 90s would be perfect) as you enjoy some live music on a Sunday afternoon. Put on a blazer and make a great outfit of the day as you head out for a coffee date or lunch date on a warm Spring afternoon.
February has come and gone and we are ever so closer to Spring (16 days as of this blog). Unlike January, this month wasn’t as eventful. We didn’t see as much snow but more rain with a freezing rain event early. Presidents’ Day felt more like Spring as I took advantage of a nice day off to walk at Twin Lakes and spend the afternoon in Ligonier.
The Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams played in Super Bowl LVI on February 13. The Rams pulled it out at the end and won their second Super Bowl. Penn Hills native and Pitt alum Aaron Donald earned his Super Bowl ring and Matthew Stafford finally won the big one after so many frustrating years with the Lions.
Area 23 & 24 held its International Speech and Evaluation Contest on February 19. The contest was held at the Carnegie Free Library. We had great representation from Laurel Highlands as well as Greensburg and McKeesport. Our past and present dignitaries showed up as well to cheer on the contestants.
A few days later I attended my first Laurel Highlands meeting as one of their newest members. We had a guest speaker who talked about the importance of gestures. We even did a little exercise during Mary’s presentation. I’ll be giving an ice breaker at the March 8 meeting. This is my third ice speaker speech with Toastmasters and so I’m trying to give this one with more up to date material.
February has been my time to stock up on amazing fashionwear and Old Navy has not disappointed. I love this cute top that I use as the thumbnail for most of my blogs. As Sara (who used to work at Old Navy) tells me, “You are slaying it.” 🔥 🔥 🔥
I used my Super Cash last week to purchase some amazing t-shirts that will make for some cute Spring and Summer fits. With my Super Cash (good for $30 off) and the deals that were going at the time, I saved a lot of money. In tomorrow’s blog, I will do a fashion show and talk about how I plan to style my new Spring and Summer wardrobe.
What’s coming up in March ☘️? Toastmasters contests are in full swing as we heat up for the divisional round. I will get wire reports from social media when when I can to update you. My availability isn’t as abundant as much as it was. The new job at Giant Eagle and the blog having my attention as well as my love of fashion.
On a positive note to end the blog, I celebrated my three month anniversary with Giant Eagle and I believe I made the right choice. Paula congratulated me and gave me credit for being able to handle such a tricky schedule. She told me I had Mason blood in me. It’s an elite family name that goes back to England. They are hard workers, loyal to a fault, and have an interesting history.
That Mason blood is definitely special. Regards to my actual blood relations who are also hard workers.
Today marks my three month anniversary with Giant Eagle. I was hired the Friday before Thanksgiving and did my orientation around the holiday. I did my training and computer work on Black Friday (I also picked up my medication at the pharmacy located inside the store that day so I was able to see some of the employees as they did their work). My first night of work was the Monday after Thanksgiving.
So far, things have gone well with Giant Eagle and it’s hard to believe that at one point I used to drive to Pittsburgh all the time for work. While I’ve only been with Giant Eagle three months, it seems as if I’ve been there longer. I started around the holidays, and that meant I was really busy stocking. I get better every day and take the time to listen to my team when it comes to improving myself.
Here’s a variety six pack of cold hard facts about me. A few covering Giant Eagle, as well as WIS, and my post academia life so far. Don’t worry, I have no hard feelings about my past.
Fact #1: I came back to WIS at the right time in January 2019 and it helped shape where I am now. I got to experience Target, built my work friendships, and began to find myself and my definition of style. I had a little inspiration 🍒.
Fact #2: I left WIS at the right time in November 2021 and it has worked out well. I miss my work family and still keep in touch with them through Facebook.
Fact #3: Working at Giant Eagle has been very convenient for me. I know where everything is when I go grocery shopping; I get my medication at the pharmacy; and, I’m five minutes from home and know when I’ll be done every night.
Fact #4: This isn’t my first time working for Giant Eagle. I was briefly employed at the Eastgate location in late 2018 and early 2019 before going back to WIS full time.
Fact #5: Working at Giant Eagle runs in my family. My uncle worked at various locations for 20+ years in the meat department (in addition to working for Gee Bee and other chains) and my sister worked as a deli clerk for five years at the Eastgate location and briefly at Hempfield as a Deli leader.
Fact #6: I spent a long time living in the past wondering how things could have been different with my education. Early in my post academia life, I denounced myself because I had a degree and was working a menial job. I wasn’t looking at the long term. But over the last few years, I am happy with the way things have turned out.
After only three months on the job, I’m starting to forget what it was like to travel for work (which I did for over a decade). I’ve had my flashbacks to my not so great days but I think we’ve driven over that valley for good now.
Looking back at my post academia life, the first few years (2006-2008) were the hardest before I saw slight improvement (2009-2012). Better days came (2013-2017) and these last few years (2018–present) have made me realize that I’m at a good place in life.
One year ago this weekend I went shopping at the Tanger Outlets. My reasoning for that? To look for my favorite brand of designer purse known as Coach. I came away that day feeling confident as my gender nonconformity journey was just beginning to heat up.
I started to gain interest in Coach in the Fall of 2020 when one of my coworkers at my old job carried a Coach purse almost like mine. I fell in love with the bag myself and would buy one of my own someday. I posted a picture on my Facebook page and my adopted family just fell in love with it. I had to explain myself because I’m a guy who likes things that women like.
When I was making plans to buy my bag, a good friend who is my sister and fashion buddy reminded me, “Aww don’t be embarrassed. Be proud. Fashion is nothing to be ashamed of.” The excitement was building one day in early February as Sara and I met for coffee at Abigail’s Coffeehouse when she and Rob were still living in Ligonier. I showed her the purse I was interested in buying and she was all for it. Part of me still worried what people might think though but she told me to continue being me.
A few weeks later, after working in Belle Vernon, I made my way to the Tanger Outlets in Washington located near the Meadows 🎰. I ate lunch and then shopped at Bath and Body Works and Old Navy (my appetizers) and then it was time for main course. Time to hit up the Coach Outlet. I window shopped at Kate Spade ♠️ to boost my confidence and not get stage fright walking into the Coach outlet.
I did great while I was shopping in the Coach Outlet. I confidently made my purchases and got the purse and crossbody I wanted. I showed off the tote one Spring day in Ligonier and at Rob and Sara’s wedding in May.
That day confirmed this and that is I mean business on this gender nonconformity journey. My shopping spree and my gender nonconformity were a big part of my 2021. It’s sad that the latter came at a cost, and that was losing some friends who just couldn’t come to terms with me being different. Oh well, I’m still winning regardless.
The journey has become so much better since that day. I bought blazers and cute tops and now it’s onto more amazing fashionwear 👗. I have more Spring and Summer fits on the way and I want you to stay tuned for that.
It’s been a while but I do have some great content coming to Stylish and Trendy and, it’s a special anniversary this weekend for me as well. Plus, it’s time for me to use that Old Navy Super Cash.
Let’s kick it off with my first Laurel Highlands Toastmasters meeting since I joined last Saturday. The club meets in the Carnegie Free Library in Connellsville on the second and fourth Tuesday at 6pm. The library is just a few minutes from US 119 and near the Amtrak station.
I was here before for the Red Carpet Event back in November and what a beautiful night that was. It was memorable in so many ways watching these officers and members get recognized as part of a great new Toastmasters chapter. I’m so blessed to be the newest member of the Laurel Highlands Toastmasters family.
I first learned about the club at our DTM Gala this past summer held at Westmoreland County Community College. I met Sharon Joseph, the club president and a Toastmaster from New York City now in the Connellsville area. I also learned many of my District 13 Toastmasters friends had a part in getting this chapter off the ground, including Dana Mitnik and the Vornbrocks. The club charted in June of 2021. Dana gave a great talk on the history of Toastmasters in Fayette County at the Red Carpet Event in November.
Last weekend the club had an opportunity to host the Area 23/24 Evaluation and International Speech. Two of its members represented the area in the speech contest, Shawna Little and Sharon Joseph. It was fun to be part of a great event. I hope to make it up to Punxsutawney for the Division contest on March 26 but if not I’ll be there in spirit.
As for the actual meeting itself on Tuesday night, it was really good. We had a guest speaker at the meeting. Mary Dreliszak is a motivational speaker, author, show host and podcaster. During her speech we learned about the power of gestures and we even did a little exercise to get us moving. We danced to Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”.
Overall the meeting was well planning. For my first meeting, I stepped in as timer and next meeting I will give my Ice Breaker. What should I talk about since my college years are well past me now? I’m thinking about highlighting the more recent things that have brought me joy like this blog, my gender nonconformity, and some of wonderful Toastmasters experiences.
I learned that Mary is involved with St. Anne’s home and knows some of Rocco’s family very well, like his mother and grandma (the latter is a resident of St. Anne’s). Small world isn’t it? I mentioned my blog to her and plan to check out her podcasts and learn more about her. I think I’m going to enjoy being part of Laurel Highlands Toastmasters.
The Laurel Highlands are definitely a beautiful part of Pennsylvania and Laurel Highlands Toastmasters is a great addition to District 13.
The things that make me tick are finally coming back into play. Those are Toastmasters, my blog, and my fashion sense. It’s contest season and most events are in person once again. I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to make the ones I want to be at, but I’ll make the most of every opportunity.
Presidents Day 2022 was the best of the year by far. I’m saying that because of the amazing weather we had this afternoon. 64 degrees in February with wall to wall sunshine is nothing to take for granted.
After three months figuring out the new work hours at Giant Eagle and getting into a new routine, I feel as if I have everything figured out. After a cold January following a warm Christmas holiday, it was nice to get outside and enjoy my first taste of Spring.
Once I saw today’s weather forecast and knew that I was going to be off, I was going to have to make plans to get outside. I spent the first part of the afternoon at Twin Lakes and took my first walk since early November. Amid looking for a new job, having to adjust to a new sleep schedule, and feeling uninspired, I wasn’t able to get outside as much as I wanted to.
I capitalized on my afternoon by taking a nice drive out to my little Stars Hollow . I got coffee from Abigail’s (they still had their IceFest Coffee choices). I ordered an icicle latte and had it outside on the beautiful Ligonier Diamond. What trip to Ligonier wouldn’t be complete without pictures on the Diamond itself?
My first in person speech contest on Saturday in two years had me feeling good too. Holding last year’s contests, conference, and TLI online was OK but it took away the fun of doing it in person. Things are hopefully starting to get back to normal.
Red Carpet for the Laurel Highlands Toastmasters Red Carpet Event from November. I did my fashionable strut as I made my way inside.
I submitted my application to join Laurel Highlands Toastmasters on Saturday following the contest. Tomorrow night will be my first meeting as an official club member. I plan on having a speech ready for the March 8 meeting.
This weekend is my Coachiversary, celebrating my awesome shopping trip to Tanger last February that ended with me landing a cute Coach tote. It’s also Old Navy Super Cash time once again, so I’ll post pics of my amazing fashionwear. Let’s just say, Harry’s got some competition and I’m going to be slaying it 🔥 🔥.
Let’s hope today’s weather marked a great start to a healthy 2022.
It felt great to attend my first in person Toastmasters event in two years. It felt great to get out of the house on a cold February day. It felt great to talk to people again, who get me and my gender nonconformity ⚧ 🏳️⚧️ 🏳️🌈 . I hope to have more opportunities like that in the near future.
Our officials put together a great contest. Area 24 Director Yasmin Brown, Contest Chair Ryan Jacobs, and Chief Judge Nick Cecchetti were an amazing team. Yasmin reached out to me about helping out and with my many years of experience as a contest official, I couldn’t say no.
The evaluation contest was first up and Division C Director Joe Arnold served as our model speaker. Anna Lisa Haughwout and Jim Teague were the contestants evaluating the speech. Both gave great feedback and in the end, Jim came out victorious.
We then took a break between contests. It gave Anna Lisa and me a great opportunity to catch up since we hadn’t seen much of each other since I left McKeesport in early 2020 before the pandemic hit. She praised me for my blog and loved the inspiration I was pouring out. I talked to her about my gender nonconformity and how I recently came out in October. I even showed her my latest purchases and outfits, including my Lauren Conrad purses and my dresses.
The last time I attended an in person contest was March 7, 2020, a week before Covid-19 shut down the world. That day we had a great competition and I even gave my contest speech, even though I went over time and was disqualified. We ended the day with a stop at Oakmont Bakery and needed Toastmaster time.
Here’s how far I’ve come with my gender nonconformity. Two years ago I was apologizing for everything I owned in hopes I wouldn’t get shamed. Just last year alone things got better as I bought my Coach purse. Now I’m super comfortable being out in public even though my family fears I’ll get ridiculed for being different.
Our International Speech slate of contestants was excellent. All three of our contestants had amazing speeches to give. For our officials, this was a hard contest to judge. As great as the speakers were, only one came out on top.
Much thanks was given to those who helped make the contest a success. Especially those who attended. We got great district representation from Russell Drake and Stephanie Scott.
Your home for the 2022 Division C International Speech and Evaluation contest on March 26
Our contest winners and the runner ups will attend the Division C contest on March 26 at the Cobblestone Hotel and Suites in Punxsutawney. In the past we’ve had the division events in Altoona and Johnstown. Holding it in Punxsutawney makes it more central to the division as a whole.
Your home for the 2022 Spring District Conference which will be held April 22-24.
I am going to try and get that Saturday off so I can attend the contest as well as the conference on April 23, which will be held at the Doubletree Cranberry Township in Mars. Coincidentally, that’s where District 13 held its final Fall Conference in October of 2017.
Now that I’m established at Giant Eagle, it’s time to show off my true colors with my gender nonconformity as well as Toastmastets.
1999 was an interesting year to say the least. It was the last year of the 20th century and we were uncertain whether or not the Y2K computer bug was going to shut our world down. It was my last year of high school before I started college.
It was the year the St. Louis Rams took us by surprise with the Greatest Show on Turf. It wasn’t supposed to be that way, however. The Rams had Trent Green penciled in as their starting quarterback.
Green went down with a devastating injury in the preseason which ended his 1999 season. All hope was now on an untested Arena League quarterback out of Northern Iowa whose last job was stocking shelves for minimum wage at a local grocery store. Enter Kurt Warner.
The Rams weren’t expected to do much that season, coming off of a four win campaign in 1998. The Atlanta Falcons were the favorite to win the division and possibly the conference after their Super Bowl appearance the year before. The 49ers put a hex on the Rams, not having lost to them since 1990. Coach Dick Vermeil was wondering why he came back two years prior.
That September was crazy. Vinny Testaverde and Jamal Anderson went down with early season-ending injuries. Minnesota struggled to regain the form of their magic season from a year ago, and Denver looked like they were experiencing their worst Super Bowl hangover with John Elway officially retired. The teams in last year’s conference championship games looked like nothing like what they did just eight months prior.
October wasn’t much better. 2,000 yard rusher Terrell Davis went down for the season in a loss to the New York Jets. Minnesota’s offense was not scoring like last year when they broke the record for most points in a season. Michael Irvin was slammed to the turf in Philadelphia and his career was over. Kurt Warner was setting the league on fire with superb style of play and the Greatest Show on Turf was just getting started.
When the season ended, the Rams were the biggest surprise and Falcons the biggest disappointment. The Rams ended their long losing streak against the 49ers (who fell mightily). The Mike Ditka era in New Orleans failed miserably and he was gone after three seasons.
The Rams finished first in scoring offense and the reason was their stellar offense led by Kurt Warner, newly acquired Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, and Az-Zahir Hakim. Warner tossed 41 touchdown passes and let the world know he was for real. Marshall Faulk put up a thousand yards on the ground and in the air.
The Rams prevailed in the playoffs with wins over the Vikings, Bucs, and AFC champion Titans. The Bucs’ stellar defense held the Greatest Show on Turf to 11 points and the Titans had a chance to tie the Super Bowl if not for the tackle. Dick Vermail retired following the 1999 season and offensive coordinator Mike Martz was promoted to head coach for the 2000 season.
2000 was another great year for the GSOT but the Rams finished dead last in points allowed as the defense gave up nearly 30 points a game. Kurt Warner missed five games due to injury but Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt put up massive numbers in their air regardless. The porous 🧽 defense held the Rams back though and they lost to the upstart New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card.
2001 saw the Rams draft well on defense and they were elite once again finishing 14-2 with the top seed in the NFC and the NFL’s best record. The results paid off and they finished top ten in points and yards allowed per drive. However, they were average to below average in third and fourth down percentage, as well as red zone percentage.
The Rams picked off Brett Favre six times in the divisional playoff game and knocked off the Eagles in the NFC championship game thanks to a great performance by Marshall Faulk. They were heavily favored in the Super Bowl against the surprising New England Patriots who led by their wunderkind quarterback, Tom Brady.
It wasn’t meant to be as New England held the Greatest Show on Turf scoreless for three quarters before the Rams tied the game in the fourth. Adam Vinatieri kicked the game winning field goal as New England pulled off the upset in Super Bowl 36 🇺🇸.
2002 saw the wheels fall off completely for the Rams and Kurt Warner. Warner missed a significant amount of playing time as the Rams regressed mightily to finish 7-9 and miss the postseason. Mark Bulger took over the starting role and impressed as he went 6-1 in place of the NFL MVP. It was likely curtains for Warner after a poor performance coming off two great seasons prior.
2003 was the last true great season for the Rams and the GSOT. Bulger took the starting role immediately after Warner’s lackluster performance against the Giants in Week 1 and never looked back. Despite the 12-4 finish and undefeated home record, the Rams were done in by the upstart Carolina Panthers in double overtime.
2004 and 2005 saw the Rams play mediocre. Yes they made the playoffs in 2004 but they got crushed by Atlanta in the divisional round. The end came in 2005 when the offense and defense struggled mightily and Seattle took control of the West, finishing 13-3 and going to Super Bowl 40.
Mike Martz missed most of the season and was let go at the end of the year. Scott Linehan 🤮 would be named head coach in 2006 and the team that impressed us with the Greatest Show on Turf was now officially dead. The end of the Martz era coincided with the end of my college years and the beginning of my own mediocrity and misery.
Like my college years, the Greatest Show on Turf era was temporary, but it was a great run and it was heartfelt. When it ended, the Rams fell and they fell hard. When my college years ended and my real world era began, I fell very hard too (at least I did early on). Like the Rams after their move to Los Angeles in 2016, I picked myself back up as well.
