Let’s face it. We’ve all been guilty of making New Year’s resolutions. because we know we aren’t able to keep them. There’s the always classic “I’m going to get in shape” resolution. By January 15 or February 1, your bike is already collecting dust or you’re not making use of your gym membership like you wanted. Or we’re going to take time and read one of the Gospels or the book of Proverbs. Unfortunately, there’s a crazy little thing called life that gets in the way and we can’t even take five minutes out of our day to spend time alone with the Lord.

Maybe our New Year’s resolution is to take up a new skill, or learn a foreign language. For me, that New Year’s resolution came three months late when I started learning Spanish on the Duolingo app. It became a habit and now, I’m skilled in learning not one, two or three, but four different languages. What started with Spanish (which is on hiatus right now) has turned into French, Italian, and even German. I try to do a little bit every day to keep up my streak and my standing in the prestigious Diamond League as I try win the tournaments every week.
After 2022 and questioning myself and my decision to go non-binary, one of my New Yearβs resolutions is to return to self and doing what brings me joy. Just in the last week, I feel this new year has already been better. Maybe wiping the slate clean really does change things. I’ll also be making more coffee dates (even if most of them are with myself), buying a webcam so I can attend more online Toastmasters meetings, continuing to slay my amazing fashionwear.

Another new year’s resolution I have is to read the classics. I bought a set of Jane Austen novels (all condensed into one big book) as well as Shakespeare’s works (I’ve been interested in Shakespeare in the past). I’ll be reading like Rory Gilmore (in her Chilton days). I’m also interested in Homer’s Iliad and The Odyssey. That’ll be my reward and for Christmas, the Nutcracker.
2020 started out promising and then came uncertainty with the start of the pandemic. Would I still have work? How long would this all last? Would things ever be the same? 2021 was a milestone year with many great events happening. I turned 40, my “sister” got married and I got to be part of the wedding, I finally “ran the gauntlet”, and I began to find myself. The year ended with a big career change and that has only benefitted me more, though I will always have my memories of WIS.
2021 was two steps forward, one step back. 2022, however, was one step forward and three steps back. But we righted the ship and I look forward to 2023 being just as great as 2021 if not better.
