Seven Stylish Rules to Live By

Happy Wednesday. Stylish DTM here. I hope you’re enjoying the motivational blogs this week. On Monday, I told you to start that thing you’ve put off and yesterday I coaxed you to find ways to create motivation.

Today I’m going start the blog with some words of encouragement to lift you up and then give you seven rules to live by.

“You are going to do just fine”. If you’re having a bad week and everything that could go wrong has, you may feel like giving up. You just need to assure yourself that everything will be all right. Back in my Slippery Rock days, I gave a friend of mine some good words as she was getting ready to take her PRAXIS exam (the exam that education majors take to get certified. A month later during the holidays, she got her test back and she did great. There was nothing to worry about. It was just a test anyways. She thanked me for a doing a lot for her during that difficult time.

“Don’t Give Up, Don’t Ever Give Up”. The words of the late, great Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach. People remember Valvano running up and down the court after NC State upset Houston in the 1983 NCAA Championship. People also remember Jimmy V for a memorable speech he gave while accepting the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award shortly before he died of cancer. Valvano announced the formation of the “V Foundation”, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer and its motto: “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.”

These words might just make or break your dream. Now here are seven rules to live by that might just make or break your day.

Let It Go—You did bad on a test and know it’s going to ruin your semester. Your day ran long and you have to be up early the next day. You had a fight with your girlfriend or boyfriend. That all happened yesterday. Today you’re having a great day. Don’t let the bad events of Monday the 17th ruin your Tuesday the 18th.

Ignore Them—You enjoy updating or expanding your wardrobe and taking selfies 🤳 and posting them to social media. Someone tells you it’s a waste of time and it’s silly. Don’t listen to them, live the life that empowers you.

Give It Time—You and your best friend got into an argument. You worry that your longtime friendship may be over because of something you said. Eventually it will blow over and the two of you will hash it out. Both of you were in the wrong and your friendship matters more than some petty difference.

Don’t Compare—The only person you should try to beat is the person you were yesterday. Don’t spend your days, weeks, or months competing with that person. You don’t know their story. If you wasted your Wednesday trying to beat them, then on Thursday beat the person who tried to measure up to them (that’s you). Be better.

Stay Calm—I was recently named publications chair for my upcoming Spring conference. I have no clue what all is entailed, who my team is, or what the deadlines will be. It’s ok not to have everything figured out right now. With time and a little help from my conference chairs, I know that I’ll get there. I’ll have a new skill under my wing and I’ll be a fine chair.

It’s on You—Only you are in charge of your happiness. Not that person who tells you otherwise. They aren’t out for your best interests. They just want to fulfill a lost dream or impress those who don’t care anyways.

Smile—Even if you don’t want to be there, a change in attitude can change the course of your day and make it worthwhile. Life is short, enjoy it while you have it.

Time to close off the blog with some more encouraging words. Live your best life. Be your best you. ROCK out because you are worth it. Don’t forget to laugh because laughter is the best medicine. I hope you live by these seven rules and make the best of your day. It’s almost the weekend. Two more days plus, some of you may have a long weekend coming up with Presidents’ Day on Monday.

Bye everyone. ❤️ you.
